Preparation for the multiple choice exam in "Literature and Textual Analysis; Composition and Rhetoric"In this class, we'll take a series of quizzes aimed at helping you memorize the crucial content areas of Subtest One. In this class we'll focus on: literary terminology (e.g. metonymy vs. synechdoche, ballad vs. lyric, epigram vs. epigraph, iambic vs. trochaic meter), schools of criticism (e.g. formalism, feminism, new historicism, Marxist and Freudian criticism), and literary periods and authors (from the Classical Age to Modernism). |
In this class, you'll learn a step-by-step system for analyzing, outlining, and writing a passing literary analysis essay. We'll practice outlining responses to the types of essay questions on Subtest Three - using page 7 of your study guide "MRS DT FIRST" as a checklist. (It's helpful to print that page and bring to class.) We'll be practicing with literature distributed in class (NOT in your study guide), so no need to bring the entire guide. |
In this optional but highly-recommended "practice" class, we'll write essays in a timed environment. It's intended as a continuation of the class offered on Sunday ("Part I") but if you didn't find me in time to take Part I, you won't be lost. If you can only afford to take one class or if your weakness is knowledge of literary terminology take Part I. If you weakness is essay writing, take Part II. |
In this class, you'll learn how to outline and write a passing "short constructed response" - and avoid the hidden traps. This class is held only one week before the exam, but if you want to get a head-start reading and writing practice essays, enroll early; you'll recieve the study guide when you enroll and can work with it up until the class. In class, we'll be going over practice questions NOT in your study guide, so no need to bring it with you. |
